Tuscany was recently declared one of the top destinations for gay tourism in the world. As a result, regional officials announced on July 7 that it will dedicate an entire portal of the province's tourism website, www.intoscana.turismo.it, to the homosexual community who want to visit Tuscany as well as to the initiatives of Friendly Versilia, a consortium comprising 49 gay and gay-friendly firms, located between Torre del Lago and Forte dei Marmi.
‘Tuscany is one of the favoured destinations for homosexual tourists because it is and always has been very open and welcoming. For several years now, we've had a great collaboration with the ‘Versilia open land' project and by way of our unique tourism website, we can now publicize the events promoted by Friendly Versilia,' said the region's tourism counsellor, Cristina Scaletti.
Global gay tourism has been growing recently, with singles, couples and groups organizing tours in Tuscany. ‘Tuscany, which in 2004 passed a law banning discrimination based on sexual orientation, has been heading in this direction for some time,' Scaletti concluded. ‘Today, we took a step towards a more respectful, more mature approach, and we will continue to improve our website's capacity to offer the cultural opportunities of our region to everyone.'
The Tuscan region's official tourism website, www.intoscana.turismo.it, is currently being revamped and the new and improved portal will be launched in late July.
